Spotlighting the probation meeting – Lived experiences of desistance-supporting interaction following imprisonment

Probation staff in Norway are responsible for implementing the continuation of sentences following imprisonment, such as drug rehabilitation institutions, electronic monitoring, home detention, and early release on parole. The Norwegian Correctional Service aims to support positive change provide training change-focused dialogue. However, little is known about content meetings between formerly imprisoned persons probation imprisonment. Our analysis based 19 interviews conducted within first year after or transition from prison community highlights participants’ lived experiences these meetings. We show their perceptions value this dialogue, especially it delves into circumstances contributing offence, how offence affects self-concept challenging barriers approaching society. This interaction often developed sustained relationships.
